Parents Transforming Education through Digital Support

In Umguza and Mhondoro Ngezi districts, parents are actively taking steps to support the Digitalize Schools to Transform Education project, initiated by ECOZI and backed by GIZ. This initiative aims to enhance digital literacy and bridge the gap between urban and rural schools in Zimbabwe.

As part of this project, ECOZI conducted capacity-building trainings in four districts: Umguza, Nkayi, Mhondoro Ngezi, and Zvimba. These workshops focused on imparting essential digital skills to both teachers and students, laying a strong foundation for digital learning.

Following the training sessions, ECOZI organized community dialogues and media engagements to raise awareness among parents, local leaders, and business people about the significance of supporting their schools. These follow-up activities have been crucial in shifting perceptions about the digitization of education, highlighting its importance for the future of students.

In September, the impact of this initiative became evident when a school in Umguza received two laptops from a supportive parent, intended for pupil use. This act of generosity inspired other parents to inquire about how they could contribute to the initiative. Reports from Mhondoro Ngezi indicate that parents have also made cash pledges to help establish the necessary infrastructure for digital learning at their schools.

“The Digitalize Schools to Transform Education in Zimbabwe project has been incredibly significant. Parents have been coming to schools pledging cash donations, and we are optimistic that by year-end, we will have received substantial support,” said PED Mhuma.

The enthusiasm and commitment shown by parents in these districts are transforming the educational landscape, fostering a collaborative spirit that empowers communities to invest in their children’s future. Through these collective efforts, the journey toward digital inclusion in education is gaining momentum, ensuring that students in rural areas have access to the resources they need to thrive in a digital world.
