Impact Story: Lifeline Guta and the Fight for Inclusivity at the University of Zimbabwe

Lifeline Guta, a dedicated student at the University of Zimbabwe, has taken a bold step in advocating for inclusivity at his institution by launching a podcast that addresses critical issues surrounding inclusivity in higher education. His journey began after participating in media engagements organized by the Education Coalition of Zimbabwe (ECOZI), which aim to strengthen inclusivity in higher and tertiary institutions across the country.

ECOZI hosts various media initiatives each quarter, including radio shows, television programs, and Twitter chats, to engage students from diverse institutions in Zimbabwe. These platforms serve to raise awareness and gather insights for advocacy aimed at improving inclusivity in educational settings.

Guta took part in all three activities and shared how they transformed his understanding of inclusivity. “Lessons learned from the engagement included the multifaceted nature of a safe learning environment,” he explained. “I discovered that a truly safe environment is one that is inclusive, genuinely secure, and encompasses all social aspects of the learning experience.”

These engagements not only deepened Guta’s knowledge but also inspired him to encourage broader student participation in decision-making processes. He recognized the importance of including diverse voices in discussions that ensure institutions are safe and inclusive for all. “Through identifying challenges such as sexual harassment, I realized the necessity of amplifying calls for policy reforms through active student participation in issues that directly affect us,” he noted. “This involves acknowledging the rich diversity we have in Zimbabwe regarding appearance and ability.”

ECOZI’s media engagements have proven to be vital platforms for sensitizing students, raising awareness, and empowering them on issues that impact their education. Since the project’s inception, ECOZI has reached thousands of students, fostering a collective understanding of inclusivity.

During his engagement with ECOZI, Guta highlighted significant gaps in infrastructural requirements that align with the principles of inclusivity. “Without disability-oriented buildings, we cannot have meaningful discussions about inclusivity,” he remarked. This realization sparked Guta’s commitment to raising awareness about the essentials of inclusive education.

Driven by his passion, Guta conducted research on what is required for inclusive education in higher and tertiary institutions. This initiative led to the creation of his podcast, featuring discussions with representatives from the disability community, further amplifying voices that are often marginalized in educational settings.

Through Guta’s efforts, the conversation around inclusivity at the University of Zimbabwe and beyond continues to grow, inspiring other students to engage, participate, and advocate for a more inclusive educational environment. His story exemplifies the transformative power of student activism and the vital role of inclusivity in shaping a safer and more equitable learning experience for all.
